Durban Metro Council’s Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Laboratory

In October 2000 the Durban Metropolitan Council purchased an air quality monitoring laboratory to measure meteorological parameters and the following pollutants in air: Sulphur Dioxide, Total Reduced Sulphur Compounds (including hydrogen sulphide and carbon disulphide) Oxides of Nitrogen, Inhalable Suspended Particulate Matter (PM10) and Carbon Monoxide.

Air monitoring equipment is housed in a specially designed air-conditioned caravan which is regularly serviced and calibrated in accordance with established protocols. Air quality and meteorological data is extracted remotely and reported graphically on a weekly basis to evaluate compliance with South African and World Health Organisation air quality guideline values. Additional more detailed site specific reports will be issued each time the caravan is moved to a new location.

The mobile laboratory was designed to measure impacts from industrial, mobile and other sources of air pollution, provide information and guidance to regulatory authorities, policy makers, interested and affected parties, and for general public information.

ECOSERV is contracted by Durban Metro to operate and maintain the caravan's equipment, and to extract, interpret and report the air quality information.

Caravan Interior

All analysers shown on the left are mounted in a rack which allows for easy access for maintenance. Outside air is continuously drawn into the analysers via the glass air inlet manifold on the left of the rack. Analysers' signals are fed into the datalogger at 5 minute intervals. The datalogger is linked to a cell phone access modem which allows the project managers to extract, sort, interpret and report on the data.

The PM10 analyser on the left consists of a heated air intake manifold to ensure that outside air delivered to the analyser remains free of condensation. Fine particulate matter is trapped onto a filter which is replaced on a regular basis. The mass transducer design uses the principle of vibration to measure the PM10 concentration on the filter, and is therefore mounted separately to minimise vibrational interfaces.

Provisional air quality and wind information is now available on this website, and weekly reports can either be viewed or downloaded. The filename of each weekly report applies to the last date of the period covered in the report. Project Management and compliance information is shown in tabular format where pollutant concentrations are compared to South African and World Health Organisation air quality guideline "limits". Wind and pollutant concentrations are reported in graphical format.
