ETHEKWINI BECOMES SPORTS DESTINATION
After scooping numerous awards at recent sporting tournaments, Durban is set to host two major sporting events in 2011.

Ethekwini Mayor, Cllr Obed Mlaba, made this announcement when he addressed hundreds of athletes who had taken part in a victory parade down Dr Prixley kaSeme Street on Monday (20/12/10).  The parade was aimed at honouring the athletes who recently represented the City at the KWANALOGA Games held in Richardsbay, staff that participated in the Metro police Games in Cape Town and those that participated in the Municipal Games in Tzaneen.

Mlaba said the City was very proud of the participants who won various trophies for their respective sports codes.  He said that the City was also proud to not only host the 2011 KWANALOGA games (to be held in December) and Metro Police tournament (to be held in July), but also the 123rd International Olympics Committee  (IOC) session which is due to take place from the 2nd to 9th of July 2011.

Mlaba said sports was a crucial part of integrating society because it included job creation, encouraged healthy living and promoted rural development.  He said it also broke barriers and created lasting relationships amongst citizens.

Sports and Recreational Development Deputy Head Vusi Mazibuko said the victory parade was to celebrate and reassure the City’s athletes that they had done a great job.  He said the City was ready to host the upcoming events and that athletes from other parts of the country should expect to be treated to tournaments of a high caliber.  Mazibuko added that the people of Durban and surrounding areas would not be left out of the festivities, as some of the games will be hosted at recreational facilities outside the City centre.
