City conducts community safety audit
About 40 staff members dressed in grey shirts, a bib
and a hat are currently conducting a citywide community
safety audit.
A CITYWIDE community safety audit to obtain evidence on how safety and security is perceived in various communities is currently underway. EThekwini Municipality is conducting the audit with the aim of understanding crime and safety dynamics on a city wide scale.

This information will be used to inform the review of the City’s safety strategy. Communities are asked to be aware that officials will be in their neighborhoods to conduct the survey. The survey ends on 30 March after which the information will be analysed and a strategy developed. This audit is one of the flagship projects undertaken by the African Forum for Urban Safety which eThekwini Municipality is a permanent Secretariat of, in partnership with United Nation Habitat.

Bongumusa Zondo, Acting Head of the Safer Cities Unit said the audit will allow the City to ensure that the safety strategy it develops is informed through research and is evidence based. “The audit will allow us to identify the needs of various communities as there are various aspects that affect safety in communities and to develop the best strategy to address these. Each community has different dynamics which require a unique approach,” he said.

Zondo explained that 40 staff members dressed in grey shirts, a bib and a hat will be conducting the survey throughout eThekwini. They will also have proper identification.
